Was a bit apprehensive but purchased it anyway. Glad I did
First of all, l happen to love Dewalt tools and I have a bunch of them. I am also a home hobbiest.

I didn't think twice about purchasing this until I happened to read the reviews. Needless to say, I was very surprised about all the negatives on this unit. How could Dewalt let me down like that? I bought it anyway and here are my observations:

I love the pistol grip and the design.

One reviewer wrote that the blade cut was not very accurate and he was right about that. The way the blade is designed to fit in the mechanism makes for some inaccuracies. This too me is not important, but for some, it could be a deal killer. I only experienced this with a long blade - will give more detail below.

Absolutely love the four position blade design. This works great.

I wish it had a variable speed knob instead of a variable speed trigger.

You can make flush cuts to the wall or floor very easily!

Now to the meat of this thing. Lots of reviewers stated the main shaft kept breaking and this made me quite nervous. I have used but never owned reciprocating saws before. It is my belief that those people who have used these before, may have really torqued down on it while in use (this is just my thought).

I had an old dryer drum that I cut in half using a 5 inch metal cutting blade. It was cutting so fast that I initially thought I was doing something wrong. This thing wants to work. It is heavy enough to just let the weight of the machine do the work. You don't have to force it.

Then I decided to put it through a fairly tough test and cut up an 18 inch Eucalyptus stump. This is hard wood and I used a 12 inch wood cutting blade. It took me about 10 to 15 minutes as I figured I could probably easily break the shaft. Even though I had to force it, I still didn't put on a lot of torque. I have seen people really push hard on these saws when they are being used. You cannot do that with this saw.

Only time will tell if this holds up, but I think if you are a bit gentle with it, it should last a very long time. The motor is powerful enough to do most anything you like.

This was a refurbished unit and maybe the replacement shaft is of a different design. Who knows.

    Hope this helps.

    An ergonomic adventure
DeWalt looked at a six-decade-old design (hats off to Milwaukee!) and made a fairly radical change. Angling the handle portion of the saw introduces an entirely new way to address the tool. My guess is that others will follow suit and that soon, both the traditional in-line configuration and the canted handle will live side-by-side. Each will have its followers and detractors.

It's been twenty years since my last Sawzall died and I've not had a strong enough reason to get a new one. An upcoming deck replacement project this spring will suffer without a couple of reciprocating saws on hand. The physical design of DeWalt's 357 intrigued me and I've been pleasantly surprised. Whether it's my imagination or not doesn't matter - the tool FEELS more comfortable and easier to control than an in-line type (friends made theirs available for comparison). Some will consider the 10-amp motor not strong enough. My feeling is that anything above 10 amp is an excuse for not using the right blade. Or it's about bragging rights. I've tested 12-inch pruning blades, 9-inch carbide-tipped blades and 6-inch metal-cutting blades (1/2" x 4" steel bar) and have not found the motor to strain or over-heat.

The blade-changing mechanism works well. I am a little concerned about the butterfly lever for the blade lock. It feels like it needs careful handling. Time will tell. C'mon spring - I'm ready.

    The Right Tight Space Saw
I receive a lot of calls from older home owners, and people who have old homes. I am 6-1 and 230 lbs, so small spaces are awkward to me to work in. With this Saw I can bend twist and power through cutting jobs with relative ease, and the design of the handle, makes putting muscle behind it, while pushing down or pulling it across ergonomically easy. While cutting Wood or metal.

The Only drawback, How about a 18 or 24 cordless version of it. Cords are not always the way to go.

    Solid saw
Great saw. A little weird to use one handed because of balance. Also, I wish the saw had a lock on it so you can lock it on so you don't have to squeeze the trigger the entire time. It's helpful when doing long cuts.

Other than that, it works great.

Just got it and tried it on a tree limb, cut it with ease. Really like the multi-positions for the blade (right, left, up or down). Its a bit heavier than the off brand I had borrowed from a friend. I like the off set handle.

Power is good and the four way blade hasp is great. I am currently replacing all my 18v with 20v max and would love to have this same design in a 20v max

    New Vs. Reconditioned

What's the difference between New and Factory-Reconditioned?

Factory-Reconditioned products have been returned to the manufacturer and are restored to like-new operating condition; they go through a rigorous testing and inspection process. Plus, they offer a significant savings vs. new.
    • Reconditioned products may have minor cosmetic blemishes or scratches that do not affect item performance.
    • Reconditioned products may not come with all of the consumables the new version comes with (bits, sanding pads/papers, cases, etc.).
    • Both come with a manufacturer warranty and are covered by our Money Back Guarantee; New is 30 days, Reconditioned is 120 days.
