Performed this tough job in 5 seconds!
I have a 40 gallon water heater that is 14 years old and I wanted to do an overhaul that included replacing the Primary anode Rod. This Rod has a 1-1/4 hex head and is 3/4 NPT threaded. I first tried to soak the threads with PB Blaster overnight, and then use my 24" breaker bar with the 1-1/4 socket but could not budge the Rod after repeated attempts. I did some research on a DIY site and the author said that you would need to use an Impact Wrench to loosen the Rod. I then ordered the DCF899B Impact Wrench (I already had the 20V Max Battery and attached the socket; on the 3 Setting it took only 5 seconds to break the Rod free and unscrew it-SUCCESS! Although this is my first experience with this tool, my 5 star Durability Rating is based upon my previous experience with DeWalt Power Tools.

I have 2 of these Dewalt DCF899B impact wrenches and had high hopes for them but they just don't have the quality to last. Initially the tool has reasonably good power (although there are much more powerful options out there), it looks and feels like a quality tool but it seems Dewalt wanted to save a few dollars and ended up sacrificing the tool. I had the 1st one for 6 months using it a few times a week when it started making a squeal while running and then it just locked up. I sent the 1st one in for warranty and bought another one hoping I just got a dud the 1st time. I've now had the 2nd impact wrench for 8 months and it is now squealing too (it does still work for now). I looked up the squealing DCF899B on google and apparently this is a common problem with these, Dewalt uses a nose-cone with no bearing and no seal so they use an extremely small amount of grease and it just does not keep it lubricated. You can remove the nose cone very easily and add more grease but I hesitate to do this because Dewalt/Black and Decker would probably use this as an excuse to void the warranty. I wish this was a better impact and it could have been so much better but they just had to cut costs where they shouldn't have. I have an old dinosaur 889B 18-volt that has been used in the same manner as these newer DCF899B impacts and it is still working as it should after 6 years, it's disappointing to see the next generation impact has lost so much quality.

A note on the warranty: When I tried to initiate the warranty process the rep that answered the call tried everything she could to tell me I wasn't eligible for the warranty. She said I had to have a receipt and it had to be from a authorized dealer (she even told me I probably didn't buy it from an authorized dealer because there are a lot of unauthorized dealers out there), the big point I want to make here is that they have a date stamp on every tool they produce and the manufacturing date on this impact was less than 8 months prior. By comparison M1lwaukee Tool also has date codes on all of their impacts and they have a 5-year warranty as compared to Dewalt's 3-year and they go off of the date code if there is no receipt. I was able to find the receipt and it was from one of Dewalt's largest vendors so they were forced to cover it. Even after that when they sent the Impact back to me they high-lighted in yellow the words ONE TIME WARRANTY. Apparently they are trying to insulate themselves in any way they can from having to cover the costs of there "penny-wise, pound-foolish" manufacturing.

My advice would be if you want a tool you can count on for more than a few months or a tool that is backed by a reasonable warranty skip the Dewalt DCF899B / DCF899HB impacts, they just aren't the tool they could have been and the warranty department isn't much better than a bad joke.

Great help for not so great hands
Used air tools for many years and I have enjoyed the 1/2 inch impact with so much power and so much battery life and no dirt spraying around. Has cut work times down improved access to place and peace of mind to get things done. Wish I wouldn't have waited so long to purchase.
Only trouble I have had is hitting the direction switch by accident alot. Came with the combo light and 3/8 impact wrench. Truly impressive tools

Powerful enough to break loose the tightest nuts
I bought this a month ago and very satisfied with it's performance. Much more powerful than my air impact wrench, and I don't have to pull an air hose around the shop.

New Vs. Reconditioned

What's the difference between New and Factory-Reconditioned?

Factory-Reconditioned products have been returned to the manufacturer and are restored to like-new operating condition; they go through a rigorous testing and inspection process. Plus, they offer a significant savings vs. new.
  • Reconditioned products may have minor cosmetic blemishes or scratches that do not affect item performance.
  • Reconditioned products may not come with all of the consumables the new version comes with (bits, sanding pads/papers, cases, etc.).
  • Both come with a manufacturer warranty and are covered by our Money Back Guarantee; New is 30 days, Reconditioned is 120 days.
