Great drill--EXCEPT for the chuck
As with my other DeWalt 20V MAX tools, I am pleased with this tool overall. It is powerful, balanced well with the 4aH battery installed, easy to adjust clutch, forward/reverse switch easy to push, and made from the same tough reinforced plastic of the rest of the line.
Only two complaints: 1.The key-less chuck is the most serious issue. It fails to live up to the tools otherwise quality standard. The chuck is rather cheaply made, allows drills to slip, (ruining the shank of expensive drill bits with a gouge or burr or worse, allowing the bit to fly out of the chuck when you release the trigger and self-braking effect of the tool stops the chuck rapidly. You also need to be careful when tightening the chuck with bare hands, (as most do in construction). The lightly knurled metal outer portion you grip will yield a nice "friction burn" if you grip it hard to tighten larger bits. The drill is very powerful. And you DO need to grip it hard to tighten down on larger bits to prevent the above issue. (I took this tool back and exchanged it for another, since I thought it might be a defective chuck. The second tool had the exact same issue). 2. This drill, and many others, also need the small rubberized pads on each side, (like on the impact driver drills), to prevent the tool from slipping on
angled surfaces like roofs, etc.
I'm giving this 4 stars only because of the chuck, (which is a very important part of the tool). Overall, a very good tool if the chuck issue was addressed.

Good drill
The only problem I've encountered with this drill, is that it doesn't always hold the bit securely. Other than that, it works great.

When you don't need your corded hammer-drill
If you're going to be installing hurricane shutters and need to drill-in 250 Tapcons to mount tracks or other large mount-into-concrete or block projects, for goodness sake bring a corded drill. But for those projects where you need to drive in 5 or 10 (or 20) anchors into block, you can't beat this for the flexibility, power and run time. With the 2 big batteries and the charger, it's great for the hammer-drill jobs, especially up high on a ladder, where cords tend to get in the way. Switch out of hammer-drill mode and you have a great drill. Overkill for most drilling jobs and I typically use my compacts DeWalt drill and driver set for those, but if you're bringing it - more options to grab quickly. Happy to own it and can grab it instead of a 100 ft. extension cord and my corded drill for most "small" jobs.

Great drill for almost every task
This drill is great, even though there is a little extra weight your capable of hammer drilling concrete. The drill is a workhorse. And with the 4ma batteries you don't have to keep checking the fuel gauge. You can really get some work done with two fully charged 4ma batteries. I will be using this for a long time.

Great Drill
I upgraded to DeWalt drills about 5 years ago. This is my second hammer drill (still have the first one; this is a back up). They consistently perform under tough conditions. The high-viz yellow tools show up well in dirty and low light conditions. This was a heck of a deal with two 4.0 Ah batteries, charger, and a hard case (a nice upgrade over the flimsy tool bags you usually get). Highly recommended.

Expecting great things
Quality resembles my 17 year old Porter Cable 14.4v, another Made in USA product. The DCD985 is solid and strong. Low speed will twist off your wrist. The brake is strong and instant ... probably why it is a bit loud and somewhat disconcerting. Nice having the 3 way selector (drill, clutched screwdrive and hammer). Batteries have awesome capacity. Looking forward to many years of good service.

New Vs. Reconditioned

What's the difference between New and Factory-Reconditioned?

Factory-Reconditioned products have been returned to the manufacturer and are restored to like-new operating condition; they go through a rigorous testing and inspection process. Plus, they offer a significant savings vs. new.
  • Reconditioned products may have minor cosmetic blemishes or scratches that do not affect item performance.
  • Reconditioned products may not come with all of the consumables the new version comes with (bits, sanding pads/papers, cases, etc.).
  • Both come with a manufacturer warranty and are covered by our Money Back Guarantee; New is 30 days, Reconditioned is 120 days.
