Need a Cam Lever Fix!
I'm still happy I purchased this saw. It is accurate and lighter than the 12 in version. I purchased the saw for all the additional angles it can do. Those are very helpful in the real world here in the Tahoe area where everything is trimmed in stain grade material. However, there is a major flaw with this saw. The Cam for the bevel doesn't hold the saw in the higher angles. I can make a 45 degree cut with the detent but if i need to make 46 or 47 degree cut the saw won't hold these angles. Additionally, the saw won't hold a 30 degree bevel which is what I like to use to splice together 1x6 base on long walls, hence the desire to use the bevel. Can't cut 1x6 against the fence and double cutting is a joke. I may try adding washers to the cam to increase its strength. Dewalt I need a fix to make the cam lever stronger!

As a side note, I was able to purchase the LED for the shadow cut line, however, those are getting hard to find and are now more expensive than they should be. DeWalt you should just add the LED to the saw and add $10-20 to the cost of the saw.

I bought this miter saw to replace an old non sliding miter saw. It is more accurate and has a greater cutting capacity.

Outstanding saw!
I have had this saw for at least 3 years. I have trimmed over 200 homes and this saw hasn't skipped a beat. One time the blade brake did not activate and I thought I was in trouble but it never happened again.
I added the shadow line led cut indicator to it and am amazed every day of how simple this accessory is but also how genius.
As another reviewer stated he had problems with the bevel lock when you're not in a detent setting. I had the same problem but also found the adjustment for it and tightened a little and has never given me a problem since.
I have several Dewalt tools and they have never let me down. Keep up the great work Dewalt.

Great saw except for?
I bought this saw a couple of months ago, after studing all the sliding miter saws available. This saw exceeded my expectations except for the bevel lock. The saw has a very wimpy bevel lock. When you try to lock it in a bevel position without an ident, it falls over to it's stop.Hopefully Dewalt will offer a retro fitted solution to this problem. The 12"saw has a crank handle that will hold it anywhere. This model uses a handle attached to a rod that operates a cam. No good!! Tried numerous times to contact customer service but never got thru.

Clean Cutting Saw
So far, so good. I bought three new saws and one used saw since November 2017. One of them was accurate, but had a sticker for a miter gauge.
This new DW 717 cuts clean and straight. However, it could use a bit more power. According to Dewalt, this saw spins at 4000 rpm. It takes a moment or three to get to that speed. Even at this speed, it also needs more torque. The brake works fine. I did add a 10" 90 tooth Freud TK blade. This amount of teeth slows the power and speed down. It is the wrong blade for this saw. I would suggest a 60 to 72 tooth blade for quicker cleaner cuts. This saw has little to no side to side deflection.

Been using this saw for two years now. Used it to build a 300 square foot cedar deck with aluminum railing. This is a great saw. Square out of the box and easy to use. Its been used to cut lots of 2x4 and other basic cuts for around the house repairs and projects.

Dewalt DW717 is Great Saw
I've used this saw extensively since getting it. It is easy to set up and a breeze to use. Gives clean, precise cuts and has enough travel to easily cut 2x12" boards. Adjustments are intuitive and easily made.

More Accurate than Bosch CM10GD - But Overheats
The evening I received the saw I evaluated it. The left and right fences were found aligned with each other (no visible gaps between straight edge and fence, the upper and lower fence sections aligned with each other (again no visible gaps between straight edge and fence) and the fences nearly perfectly square to the table (again no visible gap). Squareness was checked from one end of the fence to the other on both sides of blade and the entire length was found to be consistent using a precision machinist square. Sweet! I found the lateral movement of the blade acceptable and was able to make a nice clean square on 12” wide board in horizontal mode and equally square on a 4” vertical cut against the fence. Slide worked well but could be more smooth. I will take the accuracy over glass smooth though. Dust collection is horrible, even with shop vac hooked up. My perception is that the Bosch CM10GD collects more dust with its bag alone then the DW717 did with the vacuum attached. The saw was not aligned when I received it but I found it very easily to dial it in accurately. I experienced predicable return to zero bevels and miter in multiple attempts, something the Bosch would not do.

Now the downside. During my hour or so of testing on its first day it was clear something was wrong. There was a constant smell of burning plastic within minutes of use, but I continued the physical evaluation. Day two I called DeWalt tech support. They could not tell me what was normal, but in the end they suggested I to return the saw to place of purchase and order a new one. No other solution offered. My day two tested showed that the metal flange on the motor reaches > 125 degrees F, and the belt pulley reaches 350 degrees F. You bet the saw is going back, before the fire starts. DeWalt, it would have been better if you offered to send me a replacement saw and a call tag to return the defective saw. I own and like DeWalt tools, but don’t make your customers pay for your poor quality control decisions.

Here is hoping that the replacement saw is equally as accurate and not the fire hazard the first one is.
