Works for me but...
I purchased unit at Tractor Supply because it was on sale. I have used 4 times and like:
no having to mix fuel
quick charge of battery
warranty
unit ready to use out of box

do NOT like:
small deflection guard... it allows material to deflect on ankles while trimming
lack of additional attachment options

Guard too small
The guard on the trimmer does not protect you from debris, it’s too small.
My shins have grass and small sticks inbedded in them...I bleed every time I trim the lawn.
Hit between the eyes with a rock today while edging my driveway. Trimmer turned upside down.
This didn’t happen with my last weed eater.
Cuts fine, battery life average.
Expected more from DEWALT.

Tool works well but only received 1 battery
I purchased this tool with and extra battery that never showed up. I have a small area that I cannot get to with a lawn mower and this was the correct tool for the job.

Not the usual reliability of Dewalt tools.
My garage if full of Dewalt tools so it was only natural that I got this trimmer. It may have lasted 2 months of light trimming before it overheated and died and I got a gas trimmer to keep up. Honestly I forgot about it until I cleaned my shed and realized I had forgotten to repair the trimmer. After quite a bit of research I found that it was redesigned because Dewalt found a defect that caused early failure. Im still within my 3 year warranty but will have to drive well over an hour to a service center and pay to have it converted to the updated and redesigned motor. Come on guys, really???

Motor heats up too fast
During my first time using this trimmer, the motor abruptly stopped after 30 minutes of use. Switched out batteries and it would run from 1-5 minutes before abruptly stopping again. I'd let it cool for a few minutes to get another 1-2 minutes of use. Motor heats up way too fast and I can't use it.

The manual has a different string head
I guess I will be getting my money back. The string trimmer head is completely different than the one in the manual. Not willing to play guessing games on how to load it. All of the youtube videos on the subject are the older type in the manual. Mine is a type 4. I am disappointed. The tool had potential.

20 volt string trimmer disappointment
I have used the trimmer for a total of maybe 10 times, just filed the line for the 3rd time, and the plastic where the head attaches to the shaft has cracked. I have in no way abused the trimmer. It is still holding tight but I was disappointed with this happening. I love the trimmer but I'm not sure it's going to last. I only use the Dewalt trimmer line as the unit came with.

Motor failure

Stopped working in less than a year
I purchased this weed trimmer (Model DCST920P1) mainly due to the perceived quality of construction. My neighbor had one of these at the time and it seemed to work well for him. Well, apparently this unit has a problem with the motor just quitting. When my motor stopped, I was doing a light job of edging grass. I thought the battery needed a recharge - nope. the indicator lights on the battery pack show fully charged and the motor still wort even pretend to turn. I used his battery as well - same result. Now for the past 2 days I've waited on hold and online for support. It seems everyone is out doing something more important. Just for kicks - I wanted to see how long I'd have to wait. So far, I've been online for 3.r hours in a hold. Online for same amount of time. Warranty's and guarantees no longer matter. Dewalt has tarnished its name with me. I should have went to Vegas to throw away $250.

How long is the 20V MAX 5.0Ah Cordless Lithium-Ion Brushless String Trimmer?
JBo on Jan 15, 2016
BEST ANSWER: Yes from end to end when ready for use the length is 67-15/16". With battery off the unit is 66" long. This was done putting the rotating hub on a hard surface and measuring from that surface vertically to the end. Should be +/-1/8" or better accuracy.

Will the new flex volt battery make it stronger and run longer?
A shopper on Jul 7, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes , it will increase the run time dramatically; it will not necessarily make it that much stronger; the flex volt battery will just deliver a more consistent output to the motor for a longer period of time; in other words the trimmer with a fresh charged 5.0 Ahr batt will have the same cutting power that a flexvolt would have after 30 minutes of use; the bigger flex volt batt just increases run time.
Will it work with impact battery?
A shopper on May 21, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes , it will work with any of the DEWALT 20v batteries including the new Flex volt battery.
Just got the Dewalt 20v MAX 5 Ah String Trimmer....love it! Although I was wondering If I can use my other 20v MAX 3 Ah batteries I use with my Dewalt Drill and Skill Saw without harming the battery?
Jamey T on Apr 26, 2017
BEST ANSWER: Yes I think it is fine to use it. It just won't last as long when you use it.
Is the battery new or reconditioned when purchasing the reconditioned tool?
Tigerbacker70 on Apr 6, 2016
BEST ANSWER: The batteries are not guaranteed to be new. Generally, the batteries are the same batteries that were returned with the trimmer. The manufacture has tested the batteries and guaranteed them for a year.
Could anyone help me how to replace the string.
Rene on Aug 7, 2015
BEST ANSWER: Turn spool clockwise to unlock as shown in Figure 9. The
white nub inside the spool will rotate away from the spool
window to indicate it is unlocked.Pull the spool straight out to remove.
4.
Remove any dirt and grass from the spool and housing.
5. First, wind new line in the channel of the spool closest to the
holding slots (10C) as shown in Figure 10.
6. Place the end of the cutting line
FIG. 11
(10A) into the retaining hole
(10B).
7.
Wind the cutting line onto the
spool in the direction of the
arrow on the bottom of the
spool. Make sure to wind the
line on neatly and in layers. Do
not crisscross (Fig. 11).
8. When the wound cutting line
reaches the beginning of the
holding slots (10C), cut the line
approximately 4 inches (106 mm).

New Vs. Reconditioned

What's the difference between New and Factory-Reconditioned?

Factory-Reconditioned products have been returned to the manufacturer and are restored to like-new operating condition; they go through a rigorous testing and inspection process. Plus, they offer a significant savings vs. new.
  • Reconditioned products may have minor cosmetic blemishes or scratches that do not affect item performance.
  • Reconditioned products may not come with all of the consumables the new version comes with (bits, sanding pads/papers, cases, etc.).
  • Both come with a manufacturer warranty and are covered by our Money Back Guarantee; New is 30 days, Reconditioned is 120 days.
